BIO

Born in Shanghai, he soon emmigrated to Toronto. Johnny graduated from the Film Program at Columbia University and was a fellow at the Sundance Institute Screenwriting and Directing Lab. His debut, Old Stone, premiered at the Berlinale. It was awarded the Best Canadian First Feature Award at Toronto IFF and Best First Feature at the Canadian Screen Awards.

SYNOPSIS

Zhao Li manages a small Sichuan Opera troupe, living and performing together in a rundown theatre located in Chengdu, China. When she receives the notice of demolition for the theatre, Zhao Li hides the news from everyone else, fearing that this could spell the end: besides the physical demolition, it’s the life of her “family” that is at stake.

Bio

He graduated with honors from the Cinematographic Training Centre (CCC). In 2011, his short film Y Volveré… won Best Short Film at Guanajuato International Film Festival. His graduation thesis Masacre en San José won numerous awards. The Gasoline Thieves, a coproduction between Mexico, Spain, U.S. and the United Kingdom, is his first feature length film.

Sinopsis:

Lalo, a fourteen year old farmhand daydreams about his classmate Ana. In an effort to win her affection, he decides to buy her the latest smartphone. Lalo’s urgency for cash leads him to local gangsters, who siphon gasoline from government pipelines. His plan backfires when he realizes that one of the  “huachicoleros” has feelings for Ana as well.
