Our Official Selection is the vertebral sense of the festival, offering the best of the seventh art through the screens of Guanajuato.

[eltdf_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]C[/eltdf_dropcaps]inema as an artistic medium of expression transcends as soon as it reaches an audience, which often happens when it’s screened in a competition. It thus revolutionizes and strengthens production of millions of new movies every year as well as their final destination that is an international film festival. This is why criteria in selection and curation are important, prioritizing quality and content.

With a selection that increases every year, this edition the Guanajuato International Film Festival received 3200 films from 120 countries to compete in our different competition categories that include Feature Film- National, Feature Film- International, Documentary, Fiction Short, Animation Short, Experimental Short, as well as a short film selection from Mexico and Guanajuato. Furthermore, an important number of films are presented out of competition in our Special Screenings that occur throughout the festival under the same curatorial and relevant focus.

GIFF’s Official Selection mixes several different contexts and makes them Windows for exploration, analysis, diffusion and exhibition of different cinematic discourses. Through their exhibition in our different venues, a large percentage of the selected movies continue their road towards international recognition and the formation of new talent. It’s also important to note that our entire program is free of charge.
