The film takes us to the National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec Mexico, a celebration for San Juan de Dios, the patron saint of fireworks manufacturers. For ten days, firework battles surround the city and people build bulls dressed up with fireworks that explode in all directions, brighten up the greatest tradition of Tultepec, as we get in an immersive exploration of festivity, rituals, danger and the absolute beauty of fireworks.
Brimstone & Glory is the result from the Guanajuato-Berlin 24/7 Artistic Residency by GIFF, in collaboration with Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg and the Goethe-Institut México. Since 2014, this bilateral initiative encourages an exchange between German and Mexican filmmakers and producers who reside in the other’s country with the purpose of raising funds and developing their films.
