The director crafts a story of a lonely man, entrapped in his own world, misunderstood by so-called loved ones who do not want anything to do with him. Yet, through subtle and quiet moments, the director masterfully creates an emotional resonance with our main character and the audience, capturing the essence of human relationships with a lyrical and beautiful ending that is both magical and affectionate. The Jury is honored to give the award to this film.

Best Short Film Fiction International (Oscar Qualifying)
TSUYAKO by Mitsuyo Miyazaki
A fascinating film that touched all of us very deeply. Through its many layers and textures, the short film makes exquisite use of the great Japanese Cinematic tradition from masters such as Ozu and Mizoguchi. We chose Tsuyako by unanimous decision for its elegant cinematography, profound acting and mostly its provocative subject matter. Mitsuyo Miyazaki is a director to watch for.

We the jury would like to congratulate Alma Ha’rel for her extraordinary brave and subtle portrayal of a community that lives and loves in a forgotten corner of the Californian desert. The breathtaking and heartbreaking film that is Bombay Beach.

DREXCIYA by Akosua Adoma Owusu
A portrait of the abandoned swimming pool of a ruined hotel in Ghana, the visuals document the uses people put to failed capitalist fantasies while also exploring the relation of the cinematic and how consciousness “intends” its object. The title’s allusion to the myth of an underwater kingdom of the children thrown from slave ships creates a bond between the endurance of the Ghanian people and counterhistorical resistance against the legacy of slavery.

Exploration of the role of photography and memory within the particular environment of Scandinavian winters. Divides viewer’s attention to the image and the story of the image’s genesis.

Enacts the poetics of irony as a self-consuming artifact. Evoking Edward Gorey, David Lynch, and Tamala punk cat from outer space, the film’s lyrical cynicism weaves its resonances with minor chords to offer a post-modern elegy quivering through the society of the spectacle.

A Lost and Found Box of Human Sensation chronicles a young man’s mourning the death of his father. It opens and extends the capacity of animation’s technical poetics to express a new range of emotions and their interfaces with the body, memory, and the psychosocial complex of contemporary life.
