This gathering of local and international film critics occured throughout the first weekend of GIFF -21 y 22- in San Miguel de Allende, holding on to a great part of the attention of an attentive audience of critics. As such, 18 specialists offered their opinions on this job at debate forums that lasted up to an hour each, a time that flew by as if it were only a few minutes, thanks to the effusiveness, controversy and support of the audience on the subject, to start in the field and to recognize their personal heroes.
We saw a little bit of everything: the concern over Avengers: Infinity War versus alternative offerings, the fact that many of them are uncomfortable with the label “film critic”, the uncomfortable not of film critics against Youtubers and influencers, which lasted two days; the validation of film criticism as something that can be contemplated as useful for media and marketing from the audience, the hopeful visions of progress in international film criticism and the bravery of the Lebanese in facing something that is way worse than a mere debate between Marvel and DC fans, like the job issue in Mexico, which is difficult, but not impossible.
The conferences aired on GIFF’s digital platforms, so if you missed them, you still have the opportunity to enjoy them. The discussion forums finished the weekend with applause, laughter, and above all… criticisms, but the project will remain. During the next two days there will be film criticism workshops taught by Luis Tovar –on film criticism- and Jesús Chavarría –on managing social media- which will precede the move to Guanajuato City. If you want to know more, this is just the beginning of what will become the Critics’ Workshop and the Critics’ Room, for which there will be more information once this great cinematic celebration has ended.
