In 2018, the Guanajuato International Film Festival is proud to welcome the cinema of our Spotlight Country, Lebanon, a nation that offers a vibrant culture and a dense historical trajectory that gives rise to idiosyncratic voices that make up a film industry that is becoming internationally renowned.
During this edition, GIFF pays a deserved tribute to filmmaker Ghassan Salhab, whose deeply personal filmography defies the limits of narrative itself while it deals with the fundamental realities of the human condition in the adverse and fascinating city of Beirut.
GIFF is also honored to pay tribute to director Nadine Labaki, an essential director of Lebanese cinema who follows a unique vision in an environment that doesn’t always allow it. Her most recent film, Capharnaum, was just awarded the Jury Prize at the latest edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
Our selection of Lebanese cinema is made up of various sections: classic cinema, contemporary cinema, documentary cinema and selections from NDU Shorts, Lebanon Factory and the Maskoon Fantastic Film Festival, all of which represent a cinema of great technical and artistic capabilities.
