On this occasion, the tributes were paid to Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, television producer Carmen Armendáriz and Mexican actress Pilar Pellicer.
The event was hosted by Guadalupe Ferrer, Director of Film Culture Promotion at IMCINE, who was also paid tribute to in the previous edition of the GIFF.
Sarah Hoch, founder and Executive Director of GIFF, mentioned that Mexico is a country with the highest indexes of women working in film. IMCINE data states that 52% of directors and 64% of producers in Mexico are women.
Anabel Pulido López, from the Institute for Guanajuato Women who was present in representation of Governor Miguel Márquez Márquez, signaled that this event is an overwhelming example of how GIFF takes action that points toward cultural change concerning inclusion and equality. She also mentioned that cinema made by women should not be a sub-genre, but another vision to tell stories. She invited women to collaborate in camaraderie, unity and respect, following an ethical practice and a policy of solidarity.
The ceremony continued with the recognition for Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki, who has created important bridges between the Arab world and the Western world with a profoundly individual work. The director, who couldn’t be at the event, sent a heartfelt message from Beirut, where she’s doing post-production on her next film. The artist thanked the Festival and the Association for the tribute and invited the audience to know her culture through her films.
Afterwards, Carmen Armendáriz went up to receive the Silver Cross and the MUSA, for her work as a television producer where she has incorporated new formats and talents for the small screen. Her work in programs like Hoy, Ventaneando and La Hora Marcada have left their mark for generations.
Finally, actress Pilar Pellicer, who has been awarded several times both nationally and internationally throughout her career in film and theater, received the Silver Cross and the MUSA as a tribute to her career in tirelessly exploring her art.
