As she entered, the square broke in half. Applause, attentive stares and clusters of caring is what those present at Casa del Mayorazgo de la Canal had in store for the Grande Dame of Mexican Cinema, Isela Vega. Immediately molten into a hug with Sarah Hoch, executive director of GIFF, Isela would not stop laughing and sharing the highlights of a career that has spanned more than 150 films in the two hours that the event lasted.
The moderator was journalist Adrián Ruiz, movie lover to the bone and an expert in our tributee’s great career. Ruiz painted with his words a picture of the various stages that Isela Vega set foot on, leading to various eras of Mexican cinema, to the spot which the great actress has conquered in every project with her talent and her character.
Through her memories we visit the city of Hermosillo, which saw her birth; her beginnings as a model and singer in several nightclubs in Mexico City; her foray into theater with Master Seki Sano, who awoke her passion for the world of histrionics, her film debut in the film Verano Violento directed by Alfonso Corona Blake, and from there the accents on her admirable career in which she shared the screen with many of its giants such as Cantinflas and Mauricio Garcés; under the direction of such laudable names as Arturo Ripstein, Sam Peckinpah and Roberto Gavaldón.
Every word uttered by Isela Vega was a memory of her libertarian banner, her brave face toward the taboo, her life and her career, which are but a reflection that she did, spoke, danced, acted and loved as she wished. Everything in life leaves a reflection, she insisted, as a gift for never regretting one’s own determinations, which can build, or destroy, the current reality. Isela Vega is a wonder of a woman, an inexhaustible talent and an icon of a time when men made all the important decisions in cinema… Isela Vega showed once again that she has been good when she has had to be good, and has answered back whenever she has felt like it.
