[eltdf_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]A[/eltdf_dropcaps]fter the first atomic bomb went off, Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist considered to be the “father of the atomic bomb” quoted Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. Yasuaki Yamashita, an hibakusha (survivor of the bombings) who was six years old when the bomb hit Nagasaki, fights to avoid anyone having to repeat those words. The years following the bomb in Nagasaki were so difficult for Yamashita that he decided to come live in Mexico, where he kept silence for decades with the hope that he could turn the page. A few years ago, he decided he could no longer keep quiet, that the tragedy could not be forgotten and he had to fight against forgetting, apathy and insensitivity so history doesn’t repeat itself. Today he will share his story because he is certain that, even if it may take a long time, there will one day be a world without nuclear weapons. After the conference there will be a screening of Hiroshima Nagasaki Download, a documentary that brings together memories of the hibakusha that live in the American continent.
