SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE – Jardín Principal/Main Garden
One of the strongest elements of this year’s GIFF program is our Music + Cinema section which had its exciting debut yesterday. Even though the sky threatened repeatedly to break out in a fit of rain and the people who attended didn’t know whether to protect themselves from the water or to get up and dance, the raindrops were mild and fleeting, even refreshing and, as the hours went by, the Main Garden Square filled up with people. The place could not be improved upon: among local people, tourists and festival attendees, the festivities were nigh unimprovable. Those in charge of providing the sounds were the bands URSS bajo el árbol and Troker, who are also competing for the Best Original Score award for the 48-Hour Collegiate Documentary Competition.
Progressive rock was up first, with hints of sombre jazz, crescendo rhythms and reflexive lyrics, all provided by URSS bajo el árbol, whose performance was energetic. With their range of psychedelic sounds that come undone as the song plays on, clearly influenced by bands such as Pink Floyd, King Crimson and The Mars Volta, the band played songs from their albums Líneas Mentales and 7, invited the audience to enjoy their music and forget about Tlaloc’s threats, confident that the only storm would be on the stage.
And so it went, as they were followed by the kinetic performance of the band Troker, who played songs from their albums Crimen Sonoro and 1919 Música para Cine. The sun had was out by then; the weather was nice, the garden and all its surroundings were filled and the people had forgotten that it looked like rain. With a solid instrumental introduction, nurtured by elements of jazz, progressive rock, blues and funk, as well as improvisation, the concert from the Guadalajara natives filled the party scene that was getting ready for the night to come and showed why the band had gone on tour through Europe twice and played at the Glastonbury Festival.
